How you get it
This is a subspecialty credential: you need a current, unencumbered US RN or APRN license, a current accredited clinical specialty certification, and acute or critical care hours that include caring for cardiac surgery patients in the first 48 hours after surgery (1,750 hours in 2 years with 875 of those, or 2,000 hours in 5 years with 1,000 of those), and then you pass the CSC exam. Renewal is every 3 years and needs 432 hours of that kind of care plus either 25 Category A CERPs or passing the exam again. Source: AACN Certification Corporation
